Communiversity Overview

What is the New Jersey Coastal Communiversity?
The Communiversity, led by Brookdale Community College, is an alliance of eight higher education colleges and universities offering selected associate, bachelor’s, and master’s degrees as well as graduate certificates in Monmouth County. The eight member institutions are: Brookdale Community College, Georgian Court College, Kean University, Montclair State University, New Jersey Institute of Technology, New Jersey City University, Ocean County College and Rutgers: The State University of New Jersey. The Communiversity is the first alliance of its kind in New Jersey and one of only a handful of such alliances nationwide.

Is the Communiversity right for you?
Whether you are a high school, associate or bachelor’s degree graduate, or just have some previous college credit and want to complete your degree, the Communiversity has something for you. Get started by meeting with a Communiversity academic advisor now. Call 732-280-7090 (ext. 6007) or e-mail .

Attention students at Brookdale Community
College and Ocean County College.

Brookdale and Ocean have articulation agreements, and in some cases dual admission programs, with each of the Communiversity ’s colleges and universities to make it even easier to transfer your credits. You can be guaranteed admission to the four-year college of your choice if you take the prescribed courses, achieve the required grade point average and meet all the admission requirements that are stated in the articulation agreement. It is very important that you talk with your academic advisor early in your college career so you know all of the requirements you need to meet to seamlessly transfer from your associate to your bachelor’s degree.

What programs are offered at the Communiversity?
The Communiversity offers a range of associate, bachelor’s and master ’s degrees and graduate certificates in the fields of health sciences, business administration, education, information technology, criminal justice, and liberal arts. Brookdale offers on-site at the Communiversity and via distance education the first and second year courses required for the associate degrees. Ocean offers its courses at its locations in Ocean County. Each of the associate degrees transfers to specific bachelor ’s degrees offered at the Communiversity. The third and fourth year courses required to complete the bachelor’s degrees are offered by one of the four-year colleges or universities and the degrees are granted by that college or university. The Communiversity also offers an array of graduate programs and certificates.

An Interactive Television (ITV) course allows you to take a class at the Communiversity simultaneously with students at another campus. You see and hear the instructor and students at the other location on a large TV screen in your classroom. They see and hear you on a similar screen in their classroom. By using audio and video technology, you interact fully with the instructor and other students as you would in any other classroom situation.

An on-line course is like a college without walls. Courses are delivered via the internet and learning is conducted at your pace and at a location of your choosing. Assignments are given on-line and you submit your completed work electronically.

What is the tuition?
The tuition and fees are determined by each member college. Fee payment is owed to the college in which the student is registered. Payment policy depends on the policies of the member college, but, in general, is required before the first day of class.

Can I get financial aid?
After applying for admission, students can apply for financial aid through the Financial Aid Office of the college that will be granting their degree, the student’s “home institution”. Students may concurrently enroll in courses from more than one Communiversity college. Depending on their financial aid allocation, the financial aid package they receive from their "home institution"may cover the tuition for multiple institutions. Students must reapply for financial aid each year.

To apply for financial aid, file the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) form, available online at www.fafsa.ed.gov or in hard copy at the Communiversity office or financial aid offices of the member colleges. Contact your home institution regarding its financial aid deadline and additional required paperwork (i.e.tax returns etc.).

What library services will be available for me?
Students have the option to use the services of either the library at their home institution's campus, Brookdale's Bankier Library, or they may access their home institution's library services remotely. Paraprofessionals and technical support staff are available at the Communiversity's Information Commons to provide assistance with research and accessing services. Articles and books ordered from the member's library via interlibrary loan are delivered within a reasonable time frame directly to the Communiversity's Information Commons. Students are required to provide a valid picture ID with an active barcode in order to borrow materials.

Where do I buy my textbooks?
Textbooks can be ordered via the internet at www.brookdalecc.bkstr.com, by phone at 732-224-2382, or purchased in person at the Brookdale Community College Bookstore. Books can be shipped directly to your home or held at the Lincroft campus bookstore.

How do I access special services?
Information regarding accommodations for students with disabilities is available from the Communiversity staff at 732-280-7090.

Students using their veteran ’s educational benefits should contact the Veterans Affairs Office at their home institution. Re-certification is necessary each term to continue drawing benefits.
